Your ventilation system is made up of several components, all of which need to be properly installed and maintained to ensure efficiency and safety.Because the ventilation system is largely unseen, many people forget about it; because it's seemingly less technical than the heating or the A/C units, many people scrimp and cut corners on it. This can lead to inefficient, wasteful systems - no matter how efficient the A/C is, if 40% to 60% of the air is being blocked by bargain-basement registers, your unit will continue to struggle.

Fresh Air Ventilation

In most other states and all commercial buildings, a fresh air intake is required. A fresh air exchange is recommended on all equipment, and an air exchange unit is offered by most manufactureres. Recycled air becomes stale and unhealthy. This equipment is easy to install, very beneficial, and inexpensive for the results returned.

Ductwork

Ductwork is made up of two sets of ducts - the Supply, which is where the air comes from, and the Return, which delivers the heated/cooled air into your rooms. Both sets of ducts must be sized, insulated, and sealed correctly for minimum temperature loss and maximum efficiency.

Registers

Registers are the final component in your system, directing the air into the room. With registers, you get what you pay for. Entry-level registers are called "stamp face" (pictured above). They can restrict 40% to 60% of the air flow, and are not adjustable. A better choice is a "curved blade bar type" (pictured at left), which allows for far greater air flow and a choice of direction.

As with your choice of heating unit and A/C system, make sure that the choices you make for your ventilation system are guided by professionals.
